With longer Europe seasons, river lines inch close to year-round operations

The weather may be chilly in the winter, but river cruising is heating up.

River cruise lines and advisors say their customers are willing to brave colder temperatures to get more bang for their buck in less crowded destinations in the offseason. And lines are expanding itineraries, and their operating seasons, to meet that demand.

Traditionally, the European river cruise season wrapped up after summer, returned for December holiday sailings and then hibernated for a few months until thawing out for spring. Those who wanted to do river cruising during the winter would have to look toward the Mekong or Mississippi.

But that's no longer the case. Now, Europe river cruising is inching closer to year-round operations, said Deborah Mitchell, an advisor with Cruise Holidays of Kansas City

Viva Cruises launched winter cruises in 2023, and Viking began them on the Rhine a year later. Each year since, lines have bolstered their shoulder-season offerings with added capacity.

The river cruise season is "starting earlier and earlier," Mitchell said, pointing to lines such as AmaWaterways, which in 2024 launched February sailings.

Angela Hughes, CEO of Trips & Ships Luxury Travel in Winter Garden, Fla., said travelers are eager to escape the crowds in Europe -- and also the scorching summer heat.

"It's huge," she said. "It used to be that we had a gap between September, October and the Christmas markets. Now people are saying they'll go in November."

Avalon debuted a Cozy Cruise collection last year, including sailings in October and November that give wine lovers an opportunity to experience Europe during the wineries' harvest season. AmaWaterways launched a Festive Delights collection to kick-start the holiday season early in November. The line grew its November offerings last year due to demand.

Tauck expanded its portfolio of sailings from October through December, adding more holiday market cruises and doubling its most popular Christmas market itineraries on the Rhine in 2027.

The company will also introduce a series of six-day cruises this year and next in March, October and November on the Douro, Danube and Seine. Beth Westerman, Tauck's river cruising brand manager, said the cruises offer greater flexibility for travelers who want to sail with Tauck during shoulder season.

"Guests are increasingly open to traveling outside the peak summer months, drawn by fewer crowds, comfortable weather and the same immersive experiences they expect from Tauck," she said.

Christmas cheer and beyond

Part of the demand is fueled by the popularity of Christmas market cruises.

"Christmas market cruises often serve as an entry point to offseason travel and have played an important role in familiarizing travelers with the benefits of traveling outside of peak season," Westerman said.

Viking executive vice president of marketing Richard Marnell said the demand for the line's Christmas market cruises showed the powerful appetite for off-peak river cruises.

Viking last year operated Danube cruises in January but is now focused on growing its Christmas market offerings for shoulder-season travel.

Pam Hoffee, president of Avalon Waterways, echoed the holiday market pull, saying there was no question that the Christmas spirit inspires travelers to consider cruises outside of the summer months.

Avalon sold nearly 18% more staterooms last March, April, October, November and December compared to the same period in 2024 and has already sold 10% more for those months in 2026.

The line has grown capacity in November, December and March, and Hoffee said there's an opportunity for expanded itineraries in 2027, particularly in March and November.

This year's shoulder-season bookings are pacing ahead of 2025 for Amadeus River Cruises, said executive vice president Marcus Leskovar.

"That shift is being reinforced by advisors, as well as groups and charter clients, who are intentionally selecting these dates for their clients," he said.

The influx of new ships and new brands plying the rivers is also pushing the companies to expand their seasons, Hughes said. In an effort to avoid overcrowding in smaller riverside cities, Hughes thinks the lines will continue sailing earlier and ending the season later.

And with an elongated season comes an opportunity for lines to differentiate themselves with their excursions, especially when sleepy cities are largely closed for the season, Hughes said.

AmaWaterways will debut its Easter Delights cruises on the Danube in March, bringing travelers to experience the Easter Egg Market in Passau, Germany, and the Easter markets in Salzburg, Austria.
