VisitBritain/VisitEngland and nonprofit Tourism Cares have launched the Meaningful Travel Map of England, which highlights tourism experiences that benefit local communities.
About 30 vetted hotels, tours and attractions are on the list.
The digital tool complements the Meaningful Travel Map of Scotland, which launched last year. The maps reflect VisitBritain's commitment to regenerative travel, which improves places that travelers visit.
"Partnering with Tourism Cares reflects our commitment to responsible travel," said Carl Walsh, VisitBritain's senior vice president for the USA. "It makes it easier for visitors to explore thoughtfully while connecting with local communities, supporting small businesses and protecting the landscapes and heritage that make these destinations so special."
For example, the Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa in the Lake District is family-operated and environmentally focused. The resort has focused on reducing plastic and water and energy use. The Good Hotel in London is a social-impact business, with profits benefiting children in Guatemala and unemployed locals. The hotel operates the Good Training Programme, a course for people who are unemployed and want to break into the hospitality industry.
Invisible Cities in York and Manchester offers walking tours led by local guides who have been homeless.
