Lufthansa Group will use Amadeus' modern retailing platform, Nevio, as it works to replace the multiple order records that characterize legacy airline bookings with a single, unified record.

The focus is on the introduction of an "Order ID," a new identification number that will eventually replace booking and ticket numbers and bring together all components of a trip, Lufthansa Group said.

Under the legacy systems that dominate airline retailing, flyers are assigned a passenger name record (PNR) and an e-ticket. If they make ancillary purchases, they also are assigned electronic miscellaneous documents (EMDs).

By replacing those various records with a single Order ID, Lufthansa says it will make booking, adjusting and managing flights easier and more intuitive for customers.

Lufthansa is not alone in seeking to simplify record management for airline bookings. Its goal aligns with IATA's longstanding One Order initiative to trade the multiple records of legacy retailing with a single digital record that can house anything an airline wants to sell, and also be used for more efficient post-booking settlement and servicing.

In May, backed by the Nevio platform, Finnair became the first airline to complete an end-to-end One Order booking. A One Order is also known by various other names, including a native order, offer-and-order and, now, Lufthansa's Order ID.

Finnair has since added some ancillary products to its One Order capabilities and has processed many millions of transactions with the Amadeus Nevio solution.

Lufthansa Group said Order ID is being introduced gradually at its airlines, which are Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, ITA Airways, Brussels, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss, Discover and regional carriers Lufthansa CityLine and Lufthansa City Airlines.
