The Xala Foundation has introduced Sierra a Mar (Ridge to Reef), a new environmental and community-impact initiative aimed at supporting regenerative coastal development along Mexico's Pacific coast. The program is part of Xala, a $1 billion low-density residential and tourism project under development in Costalegre, Jalisco.
Sierra a Mar seeks to restore and protect 62 miles of coastline, spanning ecosystems from mountain watersheds to coral reefs. The initiative is led by Xala coordinator Stefanie Brendl, alongside stakeholder and Costalegre resident Richard Gere. According to the foundation, less than 20% of Xala's 3,000-acre property will be developed, with more than 1,200 acres designated as a private protected area. Nearly 590 acres are currently undergoing restoration, including five miles of turtle nesting sanctuary.
The program includes reforestation efforts with endemic species, rehabilitation of Ramsar- and Unesco-recognized estuaries, wildlife corridor protection, water quality improvements, waste reduction programs and the creation of artificial reefs intended to prevent erosion and increase marine biodiversity. Community initiatives include clean water access projects, agricultural support and youth education programs.
Future development within Xala includes 75 private residences and a 51-key Six Senses hotel expected to open in 2028. The new Costalegre Airport, located approximately 10 minutes from the property, is projected to open in Q3 2025.
