Location and History
In Lower Manhattan in the "New Downtown," on a narrow street near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, two blocks from the Fulton Center and a 10-minute walk to the One World Trade Center, this 10-story Queen Anne building is a marvelous work of accidental preservation. Known as Temple Court, this was the first high-rise building with elevators in Manhattan.
Located on the site of the debut performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet (this area was once the city's original theater district), the distinctive granite and brick building with asymmetrical turrets was home to publishing offices, which hosted regular meetings with literati such as Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Mark Twain.
