Delta held onto its grip as the most punctual large U.S. airline in 2025, according to airline data company Cirium.
While that likely comes as a surprise to few -- it's the airline's fifth consecutive time topping that list -- Cirium did unveil a more unexpected 2025 result: struggling Spirit Airlines muscled into North America's top three for timeliness.
Spirit finished the year just behind Alaska Airlines with an on-time performance of 78.8%. In comparison, Spirit was on time at a 74.5% rate in 2024, sixth best among the 10 largest North American carriers.
The airline's strong improvement in 2025 came during a year in which it emerged from a Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in March, only to go back into Chapter 11 in late August. As part of its effort to cut losses, Spirit operated 25% fewer flights in 2025 than it did in 2024.
Some of Spirit's improvement, Cirium chief marketing officer Mike Malik said, "obviously has to do with the fact that they are a much smaller operation and much more tightly controlled."
But he also said Spirit put more emphasis on timeliness in 2025.
"When an airline understands that the schedule is what they are selling, they focus on that, they just become a better operation," Malik said.
Greg Christopher, Spirit's senior vice president of flight ops and operations control, said 2025's improved performance was the result of a prioritized and coordinated effort by the airline's planning and frontline operations teams.
"For example, teams across the airline have increased their focus on fleet launch, or the first flights of the day, to mitigate delays on downline flights," he said. "While this collaborative approach isn't new, I'm especially proud of how our team members have embraced it this year, and I'm grateful for their hard work to achieve these results."
Brad Beakley, CEO of travel industry consultancy Hospitio, suspects that Spirit widened its scheduled block times (the amount of time an airline allots for a flight, from pushback to arrival) to help improve its on-time stats.
"Maybe they've gotten very efficient, but [78.8%] is a really high number, and they've had some known issues with aircraft and engines," Beakley said.
Christopher said Spirit's block planning "hasn't materially changed." Cirium did not respond to a request asking if Spirit made block-time adjustments.
Padding block time makes it easier to stay within schedule but it's an expensive solution. It increases crew cost and slows overall operational efficiency.
Beakley said that block time management is a highly relevant and underexplored aspect of how an airline is performing.
Delta again tops
Delta's on-time performance of 80.9% was significantly below its 2024 figure of 83.5%, but still good enough for first place.
Delta comfortably beat the second-place finisher, Alaska Airlines, with an on-time performance of 79.2%. The Alaska statistic does not include the performance of subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines.
Cirium also doesn't include Hawaiian separately in its ranking because the brand doesn't operate the required number flights to qualify. But FlightAware data showed that through Dec. 13, the Honolulu-based brand had been on time 84.8% of the time in 2025.
Malik praised Delta's on-time performance, noting the complexity of its operation. The airline operates more than 1.7 million flights per year.
"To post that kind of number is immense," he said.
In the previous four years, Cirium had honored Delta with its Platinum Award, determined by evaluating timeliness alongside the overall breadth of an airline's operations. This year, however, the award has been given to Qatar Airways, whose large operation had posted an 84.4% on-time performance.
North American airlines reported the lowest overall on-time performance among the world's regions at 77%, up from 76.4% in 2024. Malik said the especially large scale and complex networks of North American carriers is the reason for their lower numbers.
Aeromexico again led all global carriers, defined by Cirium as those that fly to at least three regions in the world. Aeromexico was on time 90% of the time last year.
