More than 150 short films will be screened in the Elaine K. Smith Building as part of the 22nd annual Dam Short Film Festival, a nod to the nearby Hoover Dam. (Boulder City is about half an hour's drive from Las Vegas.)
The festival consists of 32 themed program blocks ranging from 60 to 90 minutes. Those themed blocks include animation, comedy, documentary, drama, horror (on Friday the 13th), love and romance (on Valentine's Day), international, sci-fi, Nevada and underground. Belgium, Finland, Georgia, India, France, Ireland, Sweden, Japan and Greece will be among the countries represented.
Each category block will include a Q&A with filmmakers, and the festival has also scheduled filmmaker meet-and-greets, coffee with filmmakers and a mixer.
A special program, "The Many Strange Films of Lee Lanier," will honor the festival's founder. Lanier, a professional computer animator since 1994, served as a senior animator on "Antz" and "Shrek" while he worked at Buena Vista Visual Effects at Walt Disney Studios. His animated short films have appeared in more than 200 film festivals, museums and art galleries.
Tickets are $12.50 per film block or $150 for a full five-day pass; one-day passes for are priced at $45 for Thursday and $55 for Friday and Saturday. The festival's $300 VIP Experience ($500 for two) includes an all-access pass, early entry to all programs, Sunday Brunch with filmmakers, a swag bag and discounts on concessions and merchandise.
