JW Marriott offers a little something extra in St. Maarten

For years, St. Maarten's hotel mix leaned toward casual beach properties, vacation rentals and midrange all-inclusives. So when the JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa opened in spring 2024, it added something the destination has been missing: an internationally recognized luxury brand with consistent service and modern design.

While the Dutch portion of the island is still very much has its barefoot charm and come-as-you-are nightlife, properties like this show it's also ready to cater to guests who want elevated accommodations and a sustainability-minded infrastructure.

The property was built on the site of the former Westin at Dawn Beach, which sat empty since Hurricane Irma destroyed that property in 2017. The 200-room resort is part of a trend reshaping St. Maarten: an effort to attract travelers looking for a slightly higher-end Caribbean stay without losing the island's signature friendliness.

Experiencing the JW Marriott

During my stay, the JW Marriott felt exactly how you want a large resort to feel: easy. The staff was professional but always smiling, trying to make guests laugh and feel at ease. Luxury without pretension feels perfectly at home in the Caribbean. After long days exploring the island or taking the ferry over to Anguilla, coming "home" to the resort was a welcome reset for me: cold drink, ocean breeze and a fluffy bed with a great view.

Rooms are modern and elegant, with warm woods and neutral tones. Bathrooms have deep soaking tubs, and furnished balconies overlook the ocean or the garden. Deluxe Guest rooms have private plunge pools. Rates start around $300 in low season but can climb past $2,000 for the top oceanfront suites.

Dining was excellent. Carambola, one of the main restaurants, brands itself as "flip-flop fine dining," which fits perfectly. My favorite meal was simple: seared scallops, fluffy conch fritters and a glass of rose with a pool view. Liguria, the Mediterranean restaurant, leans fresh and seasonal with herbs from the property's JW Garden. Between the lobby bar, poolside cafes and a small market for grab-and-go options, guests have several dining spots to choose from.

As for amenities, the resort ticks all the boxes: a large infinity pool, 14-room spa, fitness center, pickleball courts and easy access to island tours and diving. A $50 daily resort fee covers Wi-Fi, spa steam room access, water aerobics, yoga, and the usual beach amenities.

Eye on the environment

From an ecofriendly standpoint, JW Marriott is doing its part. The resort produces up to a megawatt of solar power, with 2,600 panels reducing strain on the grid. There's also a desalination plant that turns seawater into 45,000 gallons of clean water daily. Guests may never notice these systems, but they're part of a broader move among St. Maarten's newbuilds toward more resilient design.

The resort is easy to get to, about a 30-minute drive from Princess Juliana Airport, and is tucked into a calm cove with easy access to both the Dutch and French sides of the island. It is also a useful base for clients interested in multi-island itineraries, thanks to its proximity to a ferry terminal where guests can hop aboard sailings to St. Barts, Anguilla, Saba, Statia and St. Kitts.

While it may not be punching in the same category as the ultraexclusive end of the Caribbean, it's an easy sell for travelers who want high-quality rooms, dependable service, and a familiar standard of comfort in a destination that has historically been casual by nature.
