The FAA issued a final order that limits arriving and departing flights at Newark Airport to a combined 72 per hour through October 2026. The order finalizes a tentative proposal the agency put out in August but raises slightly the existing cap of 68 movements per hour.

That order had been set to expire in June 2026.

A tighter cap of 56 total movements per hour remains in effect on Saturdays through the end of this year due to construction on one of the airport's three runways.

The cap of 68 movements per hour was put in place by the FAA after a chaotic mid-spring at the New York-area airport, when air traffic control staffing shortages, technology outages and the runway construction caused rampant flight delays, cancellations and FAA-ordered ground delays.
